02 · Understanding the problem

What is happening in the flock?

The poultry intestinal microbiome is a changing community shaped by hatchery exposure, litter, feed, water, age, disease and medication. It contributes to fermentation, nutrient availability, barrier development and competitive exclusion of undesirable organisms. Chicks acquire microbes rapidly after hatch, making placement, hygiene, early feeding and water quality especially influential. Antibiotics, enteric disease, sudden diet changes and poor environmental control can disturb that community, although the effects vary between flocks.

There is no single shed sign that proves dysbiosis. Farms may see loose or variable droppings, uneven crop fill, poor gain, reduced feed efficiency or a slower return to normal intake after medication. These findings overlap with coccidiosis, feed-quality problems, water contamination and bacterial or viral enteritis, so diagnosis should not be reduced to a generic “gut flora” label. Probiotics supply selected live microorganisms; prebiotics provide substrates that favour beneficial groups; enzymes improve breakdown of feed components; and phytoactives can support gut integrity. A synbiotic combines more than one of these functions, but performance still depends on viable organisms, correct storage, suitable administration and a clean delivery system. Chlorine, acids, antibiotics and high temperatures may affect different organisms or enzymes differently. Avoid comparing products only by organism count; strain identity, stability, delivery and evidence at the stated dose are also relevant. Use a defined objective—placement support, post-antibiotic recovery or continuous feed support—and measure uniformity, droppings and FCR while correcting hygiene, ration and water issues.

Practical controls before products

  • Deliver feed and clean water promptly at placement and check crop fill systematically.
  • Clean header tanks and lines, and verify microbiological water quality at source and drinker end.
  • Confirm storage temperature, shelf life and mixing instructions for live microbial products.
  • Ask the veterinarian or supplier about compatibility with chlorine, acids and antibiotics.
  • Track response against uniformity, droppings, mortality and corrected FCR rather than one visual sign.
