02 · Understanding the problem

What is happening in the flock?

The poultry liver is central to carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism, bile production, detoxification and the handling of nutrients absorbed from the intestine. Its workload is high in fast-growing broilers and in layers mobilising nutrients for sustained egg production. Feed-borne mycotoxins, rancid fats, nutritional imbalance, infectious challenge and prolonged medication can all add pressure. Fat accumulation is a separate but related concern, particularly in high-producing hens when dietary energy intake, lipoprotein transport and exercise are out of balance.

Liver stress rarely presents as one distinctive shed sign. A farm may first see poorer feed conversion, reduced appetite, uneven gain, a production dip or a flock that does not respond as expected despite acceptable feed intake. Post-mortem findings can include enlargement, friability, abnormal colour, haemorrhage or excess fat, but these findings have multiple possible causes and require veterinary interpretation. Feed history matters: review new raw-material lots, mould risk, storage moisture, fat quality and toxin-control records alongside mortality and performance curves. Compare affected and unaffected houses, and retain representative feed samples from each delivery so a suspected exposure can be traced rather than guessed. Because liver damage may be secondary to infection or intoxication, supplementation should sit behind diagnosis and correction of the primary exposure. Early attention protects the organ’s metabolic reserve; it does not replace mycotoxin analysis, ration correction, disease investigation or appropriate veterinary care.

Record patterns, not just incidents

  • Poor FCR or weight gain without an obvious management change
  • Reduced appetite, uneven flock or slow recovery after stress
  • Drop in egg output or persistence of fatty-liver risk in layers
  • Abnormal liver colour, size, texture or fat at post-mortem
  • Recent mould, rancid-fat or suspected mycotoxin exposure

      08 · Prevention & management tips

      Practical controls before products

      • Sample suspect feed correctly and test for relevant mycotoxins; a clean-looking sample is not proof of safety.
      • Control grain moisture, silo condensation, mould growth and first-in-first-out stock rotation.
      • Check dietary energy, choline and amino-acid balance with the nutritionist, especially in high-producing layers.
      • Review mortality and post-mortems with a veterinarian before assigning poor FCR to liver stress alone.
      • Audit oil freshness, medication history and water quality when intake or digestion changes.
