02 · Understanding the problem

What is happening in the flock?

Litter becomes wet when water enters faster than ventilation and bedding can remove it. The source may be loose droppings from enteric disease, coccidiosis, excessive minerals or dietary imbalance; drinker leakage or pressure; condensation; high stocking density; or insufficient air exchange. A local patch below a drinker suggests a different correction from uniformly caked litter. Dropping consistency also varies with water intake, heat stress and feed changes, so loose manure is a sign requiring investigation rather than a diagnosis of bacterial diarrhoea.

Walk the full house and score friability, caking and moisture at the sidewalls, drinker lines and high-traffic areas. Check footpads and hocks, smell for ammonia at bird height and note dirty vents, undigested feed, faecal staining on eggs or blood. Review water-to-feed ratio and daily water curves; an abrupt rise can precede visible litter deterioration. Examine drinker height, nipple flow, line pressure and flushing practice. Record moisture by location over several days so weather-related condensation is distinguishable from persistent equipment or dropping problems. Feed sodium, potassium, chloride, protein quality, mycotoxins and abrupt raw-material changes also deserve review. Drier droppings can support litter recovery, but no feed additive can overcome leaking equipment or inadequate ventilation. Bloody droppings, depression or rising mortality need prompt veterinary assessment for coccidiosis and other enteric disease. A useful programme combines cause correction, caked-litter removal, air management and targeted nutritional support, then follows moisture and lesion scores to confirm improvement.

Practical controls before products

  • Map wet areas before disturbing litter; the pattern often identifies water or airflow faults.
  • Set nipple height, line pressure and flow to bird age, and repair leaking nipples promptly.
  • Measure humidity and ammonia at bird level and maintain minimum ventilation overnight.
  • Review dietary electrolyte balance, salt, protein quality and mycotoxin risk with the nutritionist.
  • Remove severe cake and obtain a veterinary diagnosis when blood, depression or mortality appears.
