What is happening in the flock?

The gut must digest feed, absorb nutrients, maintain a selective barrier and manage constant microbial exposure. Its stability can be disturbed by coccidia, bacterial pathogens, feed changes, poorly digested protein, rancid fat, mycotoxins, water contamination and heat stress. Damage to the intestinal lining increases nutrient leakage and inflammation, creating conditions in which organisms such as Clostridium perfringens, pathogenic E. coli or Salmonella may become more important. The exact disease process varies, and laboratory confirmation is often necessary.

Practical warning signs include reduced appetite, poorer daily gain, wet or foamy droppings, undigested feed, uneven birds and a change in water-to-feed ratio. At post-mortem, a veterinarian may assess intestinal contents, wall thickness, gas, haemorrhage, necrotic lesions and coccidial damage. Do not infer one pathogen from litter appearance alone: pullorum disease, colibacillosis, necrotic enteritis, salmonellosis, coccidiosis and nutritional malabsorption require different control decisions. Compare lesion location and timing across houses, because a repeatable age pattern often points to programme or management pressure. A phytogenic gut programme may use aromatic plant compounds to support microbial balance, digestive function, gut pH, appetite and antioxidant defences. These effects are supportive and depend on adequate exposure and consistent product quality. They do not replace sanitation, coccidiosis control, feed hygiene or pathogen-specific veterinary action. Investigate ingredient and mill changes, analyse water, review anticoccidial and vaccination programmes, and establish a baseline of lesion scores and performance before judging whether the intestinal environment is improving.

Practical controls before products

  • Run consistent post-mortem and intestinal lesion scoring with veterinary oversight.
  • Review coccidiosis control, litter cycling and chick exposure rather than treating each enteric episode in isolation.
  • Test source and drinker-end water and clean biofilm from tanks and lines.
  • Audit feed particle size, pellet quality, protein digestibility, fat quality and mycotoxin risk.
  • Strengthen rodent, insect, visitor and dead-bird controls where Salmonella or E. coli pressure persists.
