02 · Understanding the problem

What is happening in the flock?

Growth is an output, not a diagnosis. Genetics set the potential, but chick quality, brooding, feed form, nutrient density, gut function, water availability, stocking density, temperature and disease determine how much of that potential is realised. A flock can reach an acceptable average while hiding poor uniformity, excess culls or a costly tail of underweight birds. For layers and breeders, controlled and uniform growth is more important than maximum gain because body-weight distribution affects maturity and later production.

Track weekly body weight, coefficient of variation, feed intake, water-to-feed ratio, mortality and corrected FCR against the same strain and season. Sudden divergence points towards an event such as a feed change, heat episode, equipment failure or disease; gradual drift suggests calibration, nutrient, digestibility or chronic-health issues. Check whether feeders and drinkers provide equal access throughout the house and whether feed particle size or pellet quality has changed. Crop fill in chicks gives an early test of placement quality. Separate biological performance from accounting changes by reconciling feed deliveries, residual bin stock, bird numbers and corrected live weight. Post-mortems and litter observations can reveal gut, liver or coccidial constraints before headline performance falls. Phytogenic growth support can assist appetite, stress response, digestion and nutrient utilisation, but it cannot compensate for inadequate amino acids, poor brooding or restricted water. Correct the limiting factor first, then judge any programme against a defined baseline using flock-level records rather than visual impression.

Practical controls before products

  • Calibrate scales, feed bins, water meters and dosing equipment before interpreting performance.
  • Weigh a representative sample from multiple house locations at the same time each week.
  • Check chick crop fill, brooding temperature and access to feed and water during the first 24 hours.
  • Audit pellet durability, fines, nutrient specifications and raw-material changes with the feed mill.
  • Use post-mortems and diagnostics to exclude gut, liver, coccidial and respiratory constraints.
