02 · Understanding the problem

What is happening in the flock?

Coccidiosis is caused by host-specific Eimeria species that infect different regions of the intestine. Birds ingest sporulated oocysts from the environment; parasites multiply in intestinal cells and oocysts return to the litter. Warmth, oxygen and moisture support sporulation, so litter condition, stocking pressure and cycling between flocks influence challenge. Controlled exposure is part of immunity development in vaccinated programmes, while excessive or uneven exposure produces lesions and performance loss.

Clinical signs vary with species, dose, age and intestinal site. Reduced intake, depression, ruffled feathers, weight loss, watery or bloody droppings and pale birds may occur, but subclinical disease can present mainly as poor FCR and uneven gain. Whitish vent soiling is non-specific. Diagnosis should combine flock history with fresh post-mortem lesion scoring and, where useful, oocyst or laboratory assessment; oocyst counts alone do not always match lesion severity. Plot lesion findings by flock day because the timing of peaks helps assess vaccine cycling or in-feed programme gaps. Coccidial damage can predispose to necrotic enteritis, making early detection commercially important. Phytogenic anticoccidial support may help reduce oocyst output, oxidative damage, diarrhoeal signs and intestinal permeability while supporting epithelial recovery. It does not replace a veterinarian-designed vaccine or anticoccidial programme, and hard claims of eradication are inappropriate. Review product rotation or shuttle use, vaccine handling, litter moisture and drug sensitivity whenever control declines, and respond urgently when bloody droppings, rapid depression or mortality emerges.

Practical controls before products

  • Use consistent fresh-bird lesion scoring by intestinal site and flock age.
  • Keep litter dry without preventing the controlled cycling required by the selected vaccine programme.
  • Review vaccine storage, spray coverage and chick access to litter where live vaccination is used.
  • Audit anticoccidial inclusion, mixing, withdrawal and sensitivity with the veterinarian and feed mill.
  • Investigate concurrent necrotic enteritis and act quickly on blood, depression or rising mortality.
